Our research delves into the deceptive practices of these companies, revealing a disturbing trend that threatens to undermine genuine efforts towards a sustainable future.
The False Promise of 'Low Carbon' Projects
The oil and gas industry has masterfully crafted a narrative, positioning itself as a key player in the energy transition. With billions spent on public relations, they aim to convince the world that they are part of the solution. However, the data paints a starkly different picture.
Our analysis shows that the largest fossil fuel companies own a minuscule fraction of global renewable energy, with an insignificant portion of their operations dedicated to renewables. This is a clear indication that their core business model remains unchanged, despite the greenwashing efforts.
Mapping the Delay: A Global Perspective
By examining 48 projects run by fossil fuel firms, we uncovered a disturbing pattern. These so-called 'low carbon' initiatives, ranging from biofuels to carbon capture and storage, rarely result in the displacement of fossil fuels. Instead, they serve as a smokescreen, justifying the continued use of oil, gas, and coal.
For instance, carbon capture and storage facilities are often linked to enhanced oil recovery, a process that extends the lifespan of oil fields. Similarly, 'clean hydrogen' projects are frequently built on the foundation of gas production, further entrenching the industry's grip on our energy systems.
The Impact on Indigenous Communities
False solutions have a disproportionate impact on Indigenous and traditional communities. These projects, often located on sacred or ancestral lands, lead to land conflicts and the loss of communal rights. Carbon offset schemes, for example, can result in the enclosure of common land, while biofuel plantations displace small-scale farmers.
The resistance shown by these communities is not, as some may claim, a rejection of climate action. Rather, it is a stand against projects that perpetuate the fossil fuel economy and the injustices it brings.
Government Complicity and Delayed Action
What's even more concerning is the role of governments in funding these false solutions. Public subsidies are being channeled into projects that offer minimal emissions reductions, effectively delaying the necessary transition away from fossil fuels.
